CHARLOTTE—The Carolina Panthers are set to open a new era this weekend as they start quarterback Andy Dalton for the first time this season. The team will travel to Las Vegas to face the Raiders, marking their debut at Allegiant Stadium. The Panthers have a 3-4 all-time record against the Raiders, with a split performance at home and away.
Despite recent changes in Charlotte, some elements remain consistent: offensive coordinator Dave Canales aims to establish a strong running game, the defense focuses on increasing attempts on the ball, and there is an emphasis on overall protection.
Canales highlighted the need for an aggressive approach to improve deep-ball completions. "We've got to get aggressive," he stated. In their loss against the Chargers, the Panthers converted only 1-of-12 opportunities on third down, which disrupted their rhythm and play-action opportunities. Running back Chuba Hubbard averaged 6.4 yards per rush last week, and Canales plans to continue emphasizing the run game against a Raiders defense that has allowed an average of 163.5 rushing yards per game.
The Panthers have invested significantly in their offensive line by signing free agents Robert Hunt and Damien Lewis and moving Austin Corbett to center. This trio has allowed only four pressures and no sacks through 68 pass-blocking snaps each.
Dalton's partnership with wide receiver Adam Thielen is another point of interest. Despite having played only one game together previously, they connected for significant yardage during that matchup. Canales expressed optimism about Dalton's ability to work with all receivers this week.
On the defensive side, nose tackle Shy Tuttle is listed as doubtful due to a foot injury, while defensive end A'Shawn Robinson is questionable with a knee issue. Defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero may rely on younger players like Nick Thurman, LaBryan Ray, and Jayden Peevy in light of these injuries.
Evero emphasized the importance of creating good habits in defense by making continuous attempts on the ball—a strategy that has been reinforced throughout practice sessions.
As they prepare for their encounter with the Raiders' formidable offense led by Maxx Crosby, both offensive and defensive units will need to execute their strategies effectively.
