Senator Thom Tillis discusses infrastructure law and mental health investments

Senator Thom Tillis recently appeared on Spectrum News’ In Focus with Loretta Boniti to discuss his state travel and recent bipartisan legislative achievements. These include the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, legislation that Senator Tillis helped write, negotiate, and pass into law.

Senator Tillis highlighted the financial benefits of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for North Carolina: “We are approaching $13 billion coming to North Carolina. I was just in Wilmington yesterday, where we were celebrating a $250 million grant, about half of what it's going to take to upfit the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge, and a $100 million grant for the Alligator River Bridge. Every county in the state is benefitting from this bill. This bill includes a billion dollars in connectivity for broadband, and it’s proving to have the impact that I thought it would. That’s why I was willing to take the hits to get it done.”

Discussing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, Senator Tillis stated: “The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act is the single largest investment in mental health in the history of this country… I’m working very hard to make sure that everyone understands a full implementation of this bill is transformational. And I think North Carolina is on pace to be one of the most successful states to implement it. It’s coming at a perfect time. We are making progress on a challenge that still exists, and it’s the stigma of mental health.”

On bipartisanship, Senator Tillis remarked: “The reason why being bipartisan is so difficult today is that people can spread what I think are blatant lies in some cases about what we are trying to accomplish, and it causes people to be very careful and not take risks. I think that the American people suffer when we do that. We’re in D.C. to make changes; we’re not up there to get re-elected.”
