Dave Canales, head coach of the Carolina Panthers, expressed satisfaction with his team's determination following their first win of the season. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Canales highlighted the team's focus as they prepare for their upcoming game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
"It was just real, this real determination and focus to take the next step," Canales said. "This is a really focused group. I know, I keep saying that, but it really is. They have a real seriousness about the way they go about their work."
Canales emphasized the importance of moving on quickly from their victory over the Raiders. The Panthers will face a winless Bengals team known for its strong quarterback and receiver combination.
"They know they have things to clean up from the (Raiders) game," Canales noted. "But it was a great response and just really just getting back to work today."
The Panthers are dealing with several injuries following their recent game in Las Vegas. Receiver Adam Thielen and safety Jordan Fuller have been placed on Injured Reserve due to hamstring injuries, sidelining them for at least four weeks.
"Thielen's was a 'pretty good hamstring' and Fuller's as well," Canales explained.
Left guard Damien Lewis also suffered an elbow injury, with recovery timelines still uncertain. If Lewis cannot play on Sunday, Chandler Zavala is expected to start in his place.
"Chandler's a guy that brings power inside," Canales said. "I'm really excited to see Chandler step in and have this opportunity."
Defensive tackle Shy Tuttle did not practice on Wednesday due to a foot injury but may be ready for Sunday's game depending on further evaluation. Cornerback Lonnie Johnson is also being monitored for a groin injury.
This week marks the potential return of players who started the season on various reserve lists, including Jonathon Brooks, Amaré Barno, and D.J. Wonnum.
"They're all in the final stages of the evaluation process," Canales stated.
Adam Thielen discussed his recovery plan after being placed on IR. He aims to return as soon as possible and remain in peak condition during his absence.
"I'm going to try to do everything in my power...to be back as quick as possible," Thielen said.
Thielen injured his hamstring while making a diving catch that resulted in a touchdown against the Raiders but disrupted his planned celebration.
"I definitely had a celebration...but my celebration ended up being grab my hamstring and roll around the ground," he joked.
Quarterback Andy Dalton praised Canales' steady demeanor during games despite his usual upbeat personality.
"I was trying to get Dave just to crack a smile at one point (during the game) and I couldn't get it out of him," Dalton shared humorously.
Dalton credited Canales' play-calling for their successful performance against the Raiders, where they achieved 319 passing yards and three touchdowns alongside 131 rushing yards and another score.
"I thought Dave did such a great job of calling the game," Dalton said. "We got into such a rhythm."
Following their victory over the Raiders, emotional celebrations ensued among players and coaches alike.
"I think everybody saw the video of him running in the locker room after [the] game," Dalton recalled regarding Canales' post-game reaction.
Regarding team captains, Canales confirmed that Sam Franklin Jr., currently on IR, would continue rotating special teams captaincy each week based on current player contributions rather than past performances against opponents.
"I try to make it about us...I love recognizing somebody from [special teams] who embodies [our style]," he said.
Despite Bryce Young being benched last week for Andy Dalton’s start at quarterback position; Young retained captaincy duties during coin tosses—a decision reaffirmed by Coach Dave Canalés: “Those were voted by our team so those spots are permanent.”
