Veteran linebacker Shaq Thompson has been ruled out for the season after tearing his Achilles during Sunday's game against the Bengals. The injury occurred without contact on the final play of the third quarter. After attempting to walk, Thompson sat down on the field and was subsequently helped off and taken to the locker room.
Thompson, a five-time team captain and first-round pick in 2015, has been a significant figure for the Panthers. He served as a bridge from the Luke Kuechly/Thomas Davis era to the current team. Alongside JJ Jansen and Taylor Moton, he is one of three players who appeared in the team's last playoff game following the 2017 season.
The 30-year-old linebacker played only two games last season due to a broken ankle. Following Thompson's injury, linebacker Josey Jewell also left the game, leaving rookies Trevin Wallace and Claudin Cherelus to finish inside.
Thompson ranks fourth on the Panthers' all-time tackle list with 741 tackles, behind Luke Kuechly (1,092), Thomas Davis (1,077), and Mike Minter (771).
