Senator Thom Tillis appeared on CBS' Face the Nation to discuss North Carolina's ongoing recovery efforts from Helene. During the interview with Margaret Brennan, Tillis expressed concern over the pace of resource deployment but praised responders at various levels for their work.
"Resources are beginning to move. I think they're moving a little bit more slowly than I hoped, but that is why we're working on the ground," said Senator Tillis. He emphasized the need for additional resources in hard-hit areas and suggested involving active-duty Department of Defense personnel alongside state and National Guard forces.
Addressing road closures in Western North Carolina, Tillis called for military leadership in recovery efforts: "We've got to clear roads, most roads are closed in Western North Carolina...It has to be a coordinated response and FEMA knows how to do this well."
Tillis also highlighted concerns about misinformation during recovery operations. "I believe discipline is absolutely essential…Many of the observations are not even from people on the ground," he noted, urging focus on rescue and recovery operations without distractions.
Regarding voting access amid the disaster, Tillis commended state leaders for their proactive measures: "North Carolina is doing a great job...They'll be passing legislative matters this week to address it."
