Work has commenced on the extensive two-year renovation project at Spectrum Center, marking the official start of the Re!magine Spectrum Center initiative. On Monday, a celebratory event was held at Spectrum Center to commemorate this milestone.

Hornets Executive Vice President and Spectrum Center General Manager Donna Julian expressed her enthusiasm for the future developments: “This building is truly special to each and every person that walks through its doors, and I'm so excited for the future that Re!magine Spectrum Center will deliver.” She emphasized that the renovations would enhance the center's ability to host top-tier events and positively impact the community by attracting more visitors to Uptown Charlotte.

The event was attended by members of Hornets Sports & Entertainment’s ownership group, HSE executives and staff, as well as representatives from various organizations including the City of Charlotte, Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority (CRVA), Turner/DA Everett, Perkins + Will, CAA Icon, and Levy. They reflected on their collaborative efforts leading up to this point and shared their excitement for what lies ahead.

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles highlighted the importance of investing in sports and entertainment facilities: “We are committed to this investment in top-notch sports and entertainment facilities. We know that is the way to generate economic growth, create new jobs and really put us on the map as we talk about ourselves as a premier destination for major events and attractions.”

Since its opening 19 years ago in Charlotte, Spectrum Center has hosted over 20 million visitors from local areas as well as national and international audiences. The venue offers diverse events ranging from Hornets games to concerts, family events, NCAA Basketball Tournaments, political conventions like the 2012 Democratic National Convention, and significant sporting events such as the 2019 NBA All-Star Game. The upcoming renovations aim to further enrich these experiences.

CRVA Chief Executive Officer Steve Bagwell stated: “Spectrum Center has long been a cornerstone for our community, driving economic impact and supporting many of our hospitality businesses and jobs. The Re!magine Spectrum Center project will ensure that it remains a premier destination for sports and entertainment in the Carolinas for many years to come.”

During the Tipoff event's conclusion, participants donned hard hats and wielded sledgehammers to symbolically break down a wall outside on Trade Street Plaza. Attendees were also invited to sign a commemorative metal beam marking the project's commencement.

HSE Co-Chairman Gabe Plotkin remarked on building an elite organization: “We may be knocking things down here beginning today but brick-by-brick we plan to build... We look forward to...our team...arena...city center.” He acknowledged Charlotte's vibrant community spirit while emphasizing Spectrum Center’s role in fostering connections among people.

Plotkin continued: “We know how much this building means...proudly invest...continue bringing best events...confident important project tremendous impact collective future.”
