Brandon Miller's debut season in the NBA has been marked by significant achievements and milestones. As a 21-year-old rookie for the Charlotte Hornets, Miller has displayed a level of skill and composure on the court that belies his status as a newcomer to the league.
Selected as the second overall pick in last year's draft, Miller quickly proved his worth by becoming a finalist for Rookie of the Year. He appeared in 74 games, starting in 68, and averaged 17.3 points per game on 44% shooting. His contributions extended beyond scoring, with averages of 4.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 0.9 steals per game. Notably, he made 184 three-pointers at a rate of 37.3%, placing him fourth among NBA rookies historically.
Miller's performance necessitated updates to the franchise's record books as he reached milestones reminiscent of former Hornets stars like Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning. He joined an elite group of players who have averaged at least 15 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two three-pointers in their rookie seasons.
Reflecting on his season, Miller stated: "Individually, I think it was a great year overall... My mindset going into every game was go out there like you’re just trying to win another ball game."
Former Hornets Head Coach Steve Clifford praised Miller's rapid development: "I was excited about him last year and he’s a better player already than I thought he could be... He’s picked up the NBA game quickly."
Despite being more closely monitored by opposing teams over time, Miller continued to improve his statistics throughout the season. Although the Hornets ended with a record of 21-61, observers noted that Miller's efforts were not simply empty stats but reflected genuine contributions to his team.
A standout moment for Miller was playing against his idol Paul George from the LA Clippers: "Paul George is my GOAT... So I had to see him when he played here." After facing George in March, they exchanged jerseys—a keepsake that holds personal significance for Miller.
Looking ahead to his first offseason in the NBA, Miller plans to train with George and aims to increase his weight from 200 pounds to around 210 pounds. He expressed determination for future success: "We must have the mindset that we can win every game... Every game you’re going to see me go out there and give it all I’ve got."
The Charlotte Hornets face challenges due to injuries this past season but find hope in Brandon Miller—a promising talent who may become an NBA superstar.
