D.J. Wonnum, an outside linebacker for the Panthers, is nearing a return to the field after almost 11 months without playing due to a complicated recovery from surgery. Despite not being activated to the roster yet, head coach Dave Canales noted it was a "possibility," impressed by Wonnum's practice performance.
Wonnum expressed his readiness and eagerness to play: "I feel good. I feel fast. I feel strong," he stated. The Panthers could use his skills as they are currently tied for 30th in the league with just 10 sacks this season.
Last year, Wonnum matched his career-high of 8 sacks while playing for Minnesota, which made him a priority acquisition for the Panthers during free agency in March. His return was delayed by complications following surgery on a torn quadriceps suffered last Christmas Eve.
Defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero praised Wonnum's work ethic and dedication: "DJ is a really, really good football player...he is meticulous in terms of his study and his preparation." Evero highlighted Wonnum's efforts in meetings and rehab sessions despite not being able to play yet.
Wonnum has been practicing for two weeks and feels ready to contribute whenever given the opportunity. "I can play every snap," he said confidently but acknowledged that might not be realistic initially.
As anticipation builds around his return, Wonnum remains focused on staying prepared and engaged with team activities: "I'm in every meeting...just standing down, locking in." He aims to be game-ready when he steps back onto the field.
