Kemba Walker has officially concluded his professional basketball career, finding closure with AS Monaco Basket in France. The 33-year-old guard played his final season with the team, marking the end of an illustrious career that included significant time in the NBA and international play.
Walker signed with Monaco on July 21, 2023, after leaving the NBA. "Monaco had a lot of interest," Walker stated about his decision to join the team. He added that he was familiar with Monaco and had previously enjoyed his visits there.
AS Monaco Basket, a club with a storied history dating back to 1928, has recently experienced success in European competitions. The team won its first LNB Élite title last summer and has been competitive in the EuroLeague.
During his time in Monaco, Walker played alongside notable teammates such as Mike James and Alpha Diallo. Reflecting on joining the team, Walker said, "I just fit right in with those guys. They made it really easy for me."
Despite challenges from a persistent knee injury affecting his performance levels compared to his NBA days, Walker averaged 4.4 points over 26 games during EuroLeague play. His final game took place on April 11 against Bayern Munich.
Walker announced his retirement via social media on July 2. He expressed satisfaction with ending his career in Monaco: "It was everything that I could have imagined." After retiring from playing professionally, Walker joined the Charlotte Hornets as a Player Enhancement Coach.
Hornets’ President Jeff Peterson praised Walker's contributions: "He gave everything to the organization throughout the ups and downs." As he transitions into coaching, Walker remains connected to basketball through mentoring young players.
Former teammate Alpha Diallo reflected on their time together: "I was super grateful that I was Kemba’s teammate... Kemba’s the dude who would take his shirt off his back for you."
As Kemba Walker moves forward into this new phase of life, he leaves behind a legacy both in American and European basketball circles.
