The Carolina Panthers' rookie class is experiencing a crucial period of adaptation as they navigate their first NFL season under the guidance of rookie head coach Dave Canales. After 12 weeks, equivalent to a college football season, these players face an additional six weeks before their break. The team has been learning and growing together, with Canales expressing pride in their engagement and focus.
"I would say just a group that's really into it: Engaged, focused, taking coaching," said Canales. "This is important for all of us as we build this team."
Panthers General Manager Dan Morgan, who was part of influential draft classes in 2001 and 2002, recognizes the significance of bonding among rookies. "I think you always take pride in your classmates," Morgan stated. He sees potential in the current class to foster long-term success.
First-round pick Xavier Legette has emerged as a key player with four touchdowns. Jonathon Brooks recently returned from injury and aims to contribute significantly to the team's running game. Trevin Wallace has stepped up due to injuries within the team, tying for fourth in tackles. Ja'Tavion Sanders ranks second among rookie tight ends in receptions and yards. Other rookies like Chau Smith-Wade and Jaden Crumedy are making strides despite challenges.
Morgan noted that injuries have provided opportunities for some rookies to gain valuable experience earlier than expected. "All these guys got a bunch of exposure in camp which does pay dividends along the road," Canales added.
Legette acknowledged the physical demands but remains focused on improvement with support from veteran Adam Thielen. Thielen praised Legette's love for the game and his progress.
The Panthers' rookies have six more games to continue developing their skills and contributing to the team's efforts this season.
