The Charlotte Hornets have opened applications for the fourth annual Rick Bonnell Memorial Scholarship. This initiative, managed by the Charlotte Hornets Foundation, offers a $10,000 scholarship to a journalism student attending a North Carolina college or university. The scholarship is part of an ongoing effort to honor the legacy of Rick Bonnell.
Applications are available on hornets.com and will be accepted until January 6. A selection panel consisting of Hornets staff members, former colleagues from the Charlotte Observer, and Bonnell’s children, Jack and Claire, will choose the recipient. The winner will receive their award during an on-court recognition event at a later date.
Rick Bonnell was a sportswriter at the Charlotte Observer for over 33 years. His coverage included every season of the Hornets from their inaugural year in 1988-89 through to the 2020-21 season. Bonnell passed away on June 1, 2021, at age 63.
