TAMPA, Fla. — The Carolina Panthers are grappling with a challenging season as they faced a heavy 48-14 defeat against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This loss marks their fall to a 4-12 record, leaving head coach Dave Canales reflecting on the team's performance.
"Just sick," Canales said during his postgame press conference, expressing the mood after the game. He acknowledged that the team was "out-played, out-coached" in all phases and credited the Buccaneers for their strong performance.
The Panthers' defense allowed season highs in points and yards while breaking a franchise record for points allowed in a season. The offense struggled as well, converting only 22 percent of third downs and achieving a season-low 39 rushing yards. Special teams also faltered with a blocked punt returned for a touchdown.
Veteran safety Xavier Woods has been present throughout these challenges, playing more snaps than any other player in the league this season. Despite facing constant turnover due to injuries and new players stepping in, Woods emphasized readiness to compete alongside whoever is available.
"Whoever's out there, I'm ready to go to war with those guys," Woods stated. However, he admitted that they haven't collectively upheld their responsibilities on defense.
Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney highlighted ongoing evaluations within the team and expressed his commitment to improving. "We've got to finish," Clowney remarked, acknowledging missed tackles and other mistakes but emphasizing his determination to play hard regardless of circumstances.
Canales acknowledged that establishing an identity under his leadership has been challenging but remains focused on improvement. "We've got our work cut out for us," he said, noting growth in certain areas but stressing the need for better performance within their division.
As they prepare for their final game of the regular season against Atlanta, quarterback Bryce Young emphasized accountability and improvement. "We have to be ready to correct it," Young stated, urging teammates to reflect on their performances and seize their last opportunity of the season.
The Panthers are determined to end their season positively despite setbacks and aim to find success moving forward under Canales' guidance.
