Senator Thom Tillis announced that $1.65 billion in Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery funds have been allocated to aid communities in Western North Carolina affected by Hurricane Helene. This funding is part of a broader $100 billion disaster supplemental bill that Senator Tillis helped to pass, working with Congressional leaders and appropriators.
"This initial grant for communities devastated by Hurricane Helene is a crucial step in the long journey toward recovery for Western North Carolina," said Senator Tillis. He emphasized the importance of effective management of these funds, highlighting past issues with NCORR's handling of previous federal dollars.
The funds will be administered through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). One key provision secured by Senator Tillis mandates HUD to issue a Federal Register notice by January 15, 2025, ensuring quicker fund distribution. The legislation also replenishes the SBA’s disaster loan program to support homeowners and small businesses.
Since Hurricane Helene's landfall, Senator Tillis has actively advocated for federal assistance. His efforts included leading bipartisan letters urging Senate Appropriations leadership and the White House to expedite funding requests and passing necessary legislation.
Senator Tillis introduced several legislative measures aimed at supporting recovery efforts, including attempting to pass legislation for SBA Disaster Loan Program replenishment and introducing the RELIEF Act for small business aid. Despite facing obstacles such as blocked legislative attempts, he continued pushing for comprehensive relief measures.
In addition to legislative actions, Senator Tillis engaged with local leaders across various North Carolina towns impacted by the hurricane. He emphasized the urgency of federal assistance in multiple forums, including media appearances and meetings with state officials.
The senator remains committed to ensuring effective allocation of resources for rebuilding efforts in Western North Carolina.
