Senator Thom Tillis, along with 29 Republican Senate colleagues, has reintroduced the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act. The legislation aims to maintain Title IX protections for female athletes by counteracting a U.S. Department of Education rule. This rule mandates that schools allow males to share private spaces with females and compete in women's sports or risk losing funding.
Senator Tillis stated, "Americans want fairness and safety for female athletes, and we must protect women’s sports from being undermined." He emphasized the importance of ensuring "a fair future for our daughters and granddaughters," arguing against allowing men to compete in women's sports as it could potentially take away opportunities provided by Title IX.
The proposed legislation includes specific measures such as treating gender under Title IX based on "a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth" and prohibiting federal funding recipients from facilitating athletic programs that allow males to participate in women's sporting events.
The act has received endorsements from organizations including Independent Women’s Voice, Concerned Women for America, and Heritage Action for America.
