Firehouse 11 in Charlotte is on the brink of a significant transition. Built in the 1950s, this firehouse has been an integral part of the city's emergency response for over six decades. It has provided essential services, including fire suppression, technical rescues, hazardous material incidents, and emergency medical services.

The facility at 628 West 28th Street is set to be replaced by a modern structure that will better meet the demands of Charlotte's growing urban environment. The last crew transferred out on January 11, 2025. The new building will enhance Charlotte Fire's capacity and capabilities while continuing its tradition of excellence.

Charlotte Fire Chief Reginald Johnson remarked on Firehouse 11's impact: "Firehouse 11’s legacy is rooted in decades of service and resilience. It has always been a critical lifeline for the community, staffed by dedicated individuals ready to face any emergency."

The original firehouse was constructed during a time when Charlotte was experiencing rapid growth post-war. Despite its simplicity, it quickly became an essential part of the city's emergency response system.

In response to increasing demands through the latter half of the 20th century, Firehouse 11 underwent changes to address complex emergencies such as hazardous material mitigation and vehicle extrication.

However, by the early 2000s, limitations in accommodating advanced equipment and training facilities became apparent. As a result, plans were made for a replacement facility that would keep pace with Charlotte’s rapid urbanization.

Demolition and reconstruction are scheduled to begin in January 2025. During this period, Engine 11 will temporarily operate out of Firehouse 4 while Rescue 11 will be housed at Firehouse 1 to ensure continuity of service.

Chief Johnson emphasized: “The new Firehouse 11 isn’t just a building; it’s a commitment to our firefighters and the residents we serve.”

Although there is excitement about the new facility's state-of-the-art features—such as expanded bays for larger apparatus and improved wellness facilities—there is also nostalgia among those who have served at Firehouse 11.

To honor its history, elements from the old structure will be incorporated into the new design as reminders of its storied past.

As Charlotte prepares for this transformation, reflections on Firehouse 11's legacy continue alongside anticipation for future innovation and excellence in public safety service delivery.
