Today, Senator Thom Tillis paid tribute to Greensboro Police Officer Michael Horan, who died in the line of duty on December 23, 2024. In his Senate floor remarks, Senator Tillis highlighted Officer Horan's dedication and service.
"Officer Horan personified the very best of law enforcement," stated Senator Tillis. He noted that "Greensboro Police Chief John Thompson stated that 'Officer Horan was a valued and respected member of the Greensboro police family.'" Officer Horan joined the Greensboro Police Department in 2017 after serving with distinction in the US Coast Guard. His roles included law enforcement officer, tactical fast boat instructor, and search and rescue operator.
Senator Tillis recounted an incident from 2019 when Officer Horan received a life-saving award for rescuing a father and son caught in a rip current at Emerald Isle beach.
Further reflecting on Officer Horan's personal life, Senator Tillis shared insights into his family values: "One of Officer Horan’s colleagues noted that one of the main things most people would know about Officer Horan was how much he loved his family." He emphasized that discussions about his daughter were frequent among colleagues.
In closing, Senator Tillis expressed sympathy: "My deepest condolences go out to Officer Horan’s family for their tremendous loss, and my condolences go out to the community of Greensboro, which lost one of their finest, most decent public servants."
