Senator Thom Tillis, along with several Republican colleagues, has reintroduced the Justice for Victims of Sanctuary Cities Act. This legislation aims to challenge sanctuary policies and provide justice for victims harmed by these jurisdictions. Senator Tillis expressed concern about local jurisdictions ignoring lawful requests from ICE agents, which he believes endangers public safety. He stated his commitment to working with President Trump to combat illegal immigration and hold sanctuary cities accountable.

Dr. Bill Cassidy criticized previous administrations for not securing the border and allowing cities to harbor criminals illegally, emphasizing alignment with President Trump's border security agenda. Senator Kevin Cramer argued that families harmed by illegal immigrants should have the right to sue city leaders who do not comply with federal law enforcement.

Senator Katie Britt described sanctuary cities as safe havens for criminal illegal aliens at the expense of American citizens' safety. She highlighted Senate Republicans' commitment to restoring immigration enforcement in collaboration with the Trump Administration.

Senator Ted Budd emphasized that non-enforcement of laws leads to preventable tragedies and stressed the need for legal consequences for cities refusing to enforce immigration laws. He thanked Senator Tillis for leading these efforts.

In the House of Representatives, Rep. Chuck Edwards is introducing companion legislation. He pointed out that sanctuary cities shield many criminal illegal immigrants from facing consequences and called for accountability through this act.

The proposed legislation would allow individuals affected by crimes committed by illegal immigrants in sanctuary jurisdictions to take legal action against those entities if they failed to honor a lawful immigration detainer request. It also requires states or political subdivisions to waive immunity as a condition of receiving certain federal grants.
