Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services is organizing Creek Week from March 22 to March 29. The event aims to celebrate the 3,000 miles of creeks in Mecklenburg County and encourages residents of all ages to participate in stream clean-up activities and learn about local waterways.

Throughout the week, there will be 20 educational and volunteer opportunities available. Residents can engage in creek clean-ups near their neighborhoods, volunteer during lunch hours, or attend family story time with Stormy the Storm Water Turtle. Additional activities include a greenway opening, fishing lessons, tree identification classes, and mindful meditation sessions.

The week will culminate with The Big Spring Clean on Saturday, March 29, from 9 a.m. to noon. Hundreds of residents are expected to gather at various creek locations around Charlotte-Mecklenburg for this large-scale cleanup effort.

Reflecting on last year’s Creek Week and Big Spring Clean, "137 volunteers picked up nearly 20,000 pounds of litter from our streams and greenways," according to organizers. This year’s goal is to have over 200 volunteers participating.

Interested individuals can find more information by visiting StormWater.CharMeck.org and clicking on the Creek Week banner. Advance sign-up is encouraged for participants.

Creek Week partners include several towns such as Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, Matthews, Mint Hill, and Pineville. Other collaborators are Catawba Riverkeeper, Carolina Thread Trail, Charlotte Wildlife Stewards, Keep Charlotte Beautiful, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation, Mecklenburg Soil and Water Conservation District, and the North Carolina Wildlife Federation.
