In a renewed effort to enhance data collection on attacks targeting law enforcement officers, a group of bipartisan senators has reintroduced legislation in Washington, D.C. The initiative, led by Senators Thom Tillis (R-NC), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), and Maggie Hassan (D-NH), aims to address reporting deficiencies related to ambushes against law enforcement personnel.

Senator Tillis emphasized the critical nature of understanding these crimes more thoroughly, stating, "Attacks on our law enforcement officers are abhorrent and we must get a clear picture on when they occur. I’m proud to co-introduce this bipartisan legislation so we can improve reporting and continue supporting the men and women in blue to prevent these disgusting acts."

Recent statistics from 2023 indicate that over 79,000 police officers were assaulted, and 60 were feloniously killed in the line of duty. Although basic data on these incidents are collected, including timing and weapon types, more comprehensive information is crucial for better preparation and prevention of anti-police activities.

The proposed Improving Law Enforcement Officer Safety and Wellness Through Data Act seeks to:

- Broaden the categories of information that law enforcement agencies can voluntarily report, focusing on the intention and coordination of perpetrators.

- Instruct the Justice Department to investigate adding data on escalatory aggression to its reports.

- Enhance understanding of the mental health and stress-related impacts of aggression or trauma on law enforcement officers.

- Examine the availability and use of mental health resources for officers.
