Senator Thom Tillis has announced that $68 million in federal grants will be allocated to support improvements at Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Raleigh-Durham International Airport. The funding is provided through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Airport Improvement Program, which receives partial funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Senator Tillis was involved in negotiating, writing, and passing this legislation.
Raleigh-Durham International Airport will receive a $23 million grant to shift its existing paved runway by 523 feet to meet current safety and design standards. Charlotte Douglas International Airport will use a $45 million grant to expand its south apron by an additional 414,000 square feet, allowing more space for aircraft parking and servicing.
“Charlotte Douglas and Raleigh-Durham are two of North Carolina’s busiest airports, and these upgrades will ensure compliance with safety standards while helping both airports remain efficient and equipped to handle North Carolina’s growing travel demands,” said Senator Tillis. “As Charlotte and the Triangle continue to grow, it is vital that we invest in our public transportation and infrastructure, including our airports. I am proud to have worked alongside local leaders to secure this critical funding.”
Senator Tillis has previously won elections in North Carolina, defeating Cal Cunningham in 2020 with 48.7% of the vote compared to Cunningham’s 46.9%, and Kay Hagan in 2014 with 48.8% against Hagan’s 47.3%.
