Senator Thom Tillis has introduced the Care for Military Kids Act, a legislative measure aimed at ensuring that servicemembers can maintain essential healthcare coverage and medical services for their children, irrespective of where their service assignments take them.
“Military families make immense sacrifices for our nation, and ensuring their children have consistent access to critical health care should never be a burden placed on them,” stated Senator Tillis. “This bipartisan legislation will allow these families to maintain access to care, giving our servicemembers the peace of mind they deserve.”
The Care for Military Kids Act addresses the challenges faced by military families under current Medicaid regulations. When these families move to another state due to service requirements, they are required to reapply for their children’s long-term care benefits through Medicaid since Tricare does not cover those benefits. The proposed bill allows military families to remain on their home state’s Medicaid throughout their military career.
The legislation has received endorsements from several organizations, including the National Guard Association of the United States (NGAUS), the National Military Families Organization, and Blue Star Families.
