As the hurricane season begins, Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) has put forward legislation aimed at replenishing the Disaster Relief Fund (DRF). This initiative seeks to ensure that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is adequately funded to handle natural disasters in the coming months.
The proposed legislation would allocate $25 billion to the DRF, aligning with President Trump’s funding request for Congress. North Carolina has already received approximately $4.45 billion from the DRF for recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene.
Senator Tillis emphasized the importance of proactive measures, stating, “With Western North Carolina still recovering from Helene and an above-normal hurricane season expected this year, we have to ensure that FEMA has the constant flow of resources it needs to help states respond to natural disasters.” He added, “Congress shouldn’t wait until the last minute, and I’m proud to lead the effort to replenish the DRF and ensure that President Trump’s request is fulfilled so FEMA can focus on its critical mission of helping states and local communities respond to emergencies.”
In recent years, Senator Tillis has actively sought federal assistance for areas affected by Hurricane Helene. His efforts include leading bipartisan initiatives and urging both Congress and the White House to expedite funding requests. These actions were part of a broader strategy involving multiple legislative proposals aimed at disaster relief and recovery.
Tillis’s ongoing commitment includes meeting with local leaders across Western North Carolina in towns such as Asheville, Boone, Hendersonville, and Waynesville. These engagements underscore his dedication to securing federal support for communities impacted by natural disasters.
