Tre’von Moehrig, a new addition to the Carolina Panthers defense this season, has brought a fresh perspective to the team’s secondary. After joining as a starter and becoming an important part of the unit, Moehrig commented on the progress he has seen in the defense following their recent performance against the Arizona Cardinals.

Reflecting on Sunday’s game where the Panthers held the Cardinals to 82 rushing yards, Moehrig said, “I think just the attention to detail. Everybody just trying to be on the same page and everybody just flying around trying to, you know, tackle, make the play, and, you know, set edges and all that you know just came into play and we did a good job in the second half.”

Despite falling behind 27-3 after halftime—partly due to early turnovers—the Panthers’ defense regrouped instead of breaking down. Moehrig noted how players relied on each other: “I think it just goes back to everybody just wanting to be on the same page and everybody doing it for each other, everybody having each other’s back,” he explained.

“And then just going out there and playing our brand of football that we know that we see in practice, that we go out there and do with our guys every day, so that was kind of mentality, going into the rest of the half.”

The Panthers nearly mounted a comeback but ultimately fell short with a final drive at 27-22. Reviewing areas for improvement remains important for Carolina. In their first two games against Jacksonville and Arizona, opponents have frequently targeted intermediate routes—37.5 percent of passing plays were in-breaking routes while 14.3 percent were throws to the flat according to Next Gen Stats.

Moehrig addressed these trends by saying: “I think you know it really is, you know, it’s NFL, anybody can make a play in that situation, and you know that’s just how things happened in the first half with the tight ends,” referencing how opposing tight ends found space.

“And then we were able to capitalize on some of the things on the back end of the game and play our style and not let that happen as we did the first half…Just cover him and prevent the ball from getting there, and him catching the ball. That’s really the main goal; there’s nothing really too much special to do about it.”

So far this season Moehrig leads Carolina in tackles with 20 through two games—15 made within ten yards of scrimmage—which highlights his role as a run-stopping safety rather than being forced into action because plays are getting past other defenders.

Looking ahead to Week 3 after an offseason focused on improving run defense—and showing progress against Arizona—the Panthers hope these changes will provide stability throughout this year.

Moehrig summed up what is needed moving forward: “I would just say everybody being on the same page at the very beginning of the game, just going out there, making sure our communication is right, making sure all fits are right, technique is right.

“There’s really no magic sauce; it’s just everybody being on same page and making sure it’s right from start of game.”
