When Tre’von Moehrig joined the Carolina Panthers in March, he was clear about what was expected from him by Dan Morgan, Dave Canales, and Ejiro Evero. He understood the culture and objectives of the young team.
“Their vision of the team and where the team was headed, how they felt about me, and sharing their vision with how they see me fitting in the scheme of the defense,” Moehrig said. “It’s a fun place to come work too.”
Moehrig needed to experience this on the field to fully grasp his role. After participating in OTAs, mandatory minicamp, and training camp, he has gained clarity on his position within the defense.
“Man, I probably just say defensive back. Being able to play wherever the coaches need to be able to play, really,” Moehrig mentioned after a walk-through.
Carolina’s previous season’s defensive performance was not up to par. Moehrig is seen as a key player who can change game outcomes. However, he’s focused on moving forward rather than dwelling on past performances.
“I wouldn’t say we’re too focused on last year,” he stated. “I think this is a new year… our goal each and every day [is] just focus and just get better.”
Moehrig’s versatility was highlighted during his time with the Las Vegas Raiders when he achieved career highs in various defensive statistics.
“When I look at Moehrig… he’s very versatile,” said defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero in May. “He’s certainly an asset for us.”
Currently taking snaps as both big nickel and strong safety, Moehrig is working with different personnel groups under Evero’s evaluation.
“It’s been smooth… it’s been a really detailed camp so far,” noted Moehrig. “I’m excited what this defense can do.”
