During a recent initiative in Mecklenburg County, approximately 20,000 pounds of trash were removed from creeks and greenways. This effort was part of Creek Week, an annual event celebrating the county’s waterways, held from March 22 to March 29.

The cleanup involved roughly 500 volunteers, who engaged in various activities such as litter pick-ups and educational sessions. A notable event was The Big Spring Clean, which saw participants removing items like 35 tires, eight shopping carts, a washing machine, a chainsaw, and numerous cigarettes from local streams.

Additionally, volunteers contributed to environmental preservation by planting 300 native species to mitigate stream erosion, measuring 200 trees, and marking 38 storm drains.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services, which hosts Creek Week, organizes regular volunteer events. These occur on the second Saturday and last Thursday of each month, allowing residents to participate in storm drain markings, stream cleanups, tree maintenance, and other activities.
