Mecklenburg County will mark the 105th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote with a series of events and recognitions for Women’s Equality Day. The Board of County Commissioners has officially proclaimed August 26, 2025, as Women’s Equality Day in Mecklenburg County.
The Women’s Advisory Board is inviting residents from Charlotte-Mecklenburg to participate in a free community event on August 16, 2025. The gathering will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Canteen – Camp North End, located at 824 Statesville Ave., #100, Charlotte, NC. According to organizers, the event aims to highlight progress made toward gender equity while recognizing ongoing challenges and encouraging community involvement.
This year’s theme is “Redefining Her Story: Bright Steps, Bold Futures.” Attendees can expect performances by local artists such as vocalist Ruby Edwards and spoken word artist Michelle Wright, along with Barre Belle Ballet and Village Studio and Gallery.
“In 1973, Congress designated Aug. 26 as Women’s Equality Day. The date was selected to commemorate the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. The observance of Women’s Equality Day also calls attention to women’s continuing efforts toward full equality,” according to information provided about the history of this day.
The Women’s Advisory Board describes its mission as follows: “The mission of the Women’s Advisory Board is to promote the critical and emerging needs of women in Mecklenburg County through education and service.” The board operates with support from Mecklenburg County’s Community Support Services department.
