The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) Foundation met a $3.2 million fundraising goal with private and public support to expand Internet access.
"I am overwhelmed by the generosity of this community. Thank you to everyone who contributed," CMS Foundation Executive Director Sonja Gantt said, WBTV 3 reported on Oct. 13. You've made it possible for CMS to respond to the ever-changing needs of families as the district continues to deal with the impact of the pandemic."
The foundation created the Connect to Tech initiative in August to help thousands of households in the area that need home Internet access to enable students to engage with remote learning for the school year, WBTV 3 reported. The $3.2 million will cover the cost of Internet services for 12 months for 16,000 hotspots.
The foundation had more than 1,900 donors as of Oct. 12 for a total of $2,022,030 in private contributions, WBTV 3 reported. An investment from the city of Charlotte that was through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, the foundation reached its goal.
