A fight between students at school escalated, resulting in a stabbing death that has shaken the Jacksonville area.
Two other people, one of whom is a teacher, were injured in Thursday's early-morning dispute at Northside High School.
“Our prayers are with all the students, educators, families and the community,” Gov. Roy Cooper said in a WCNC report.
The alleged attacker, another student, was arrested within 30 seconds after the school resource officer was made aware of the fight.
Two students and a teacher were injured in the stabbing, with one dying after being taken to the hospital. The other student was also taken to the hospital, while the teacher was treated on the scene.
Classes were canceled on Thursday, and Friday was set aside as a virtual learning day. Students are expected to return to live classes on Tuesday, after the Labor Day holiday.
Cooper has offered whatever support the state can provide as the community copes with the death and the State Bureau of Investigation will help collect evidence for any future legal proceedings.
