Charlotte, N.C. - The City of Charlotte Solid Waste Services has announced its 2023 holiday collection schedule and is reminding residents about the proper disposal of hazardous items. In observance of the Christmas holiday, garbage, recycling, yard waste, and scheduled bulky waste will not be collected on Monday, Dec. 25.
According to Solid Waste Services, collection will operate on a one-day delay following the holiday. Customers who usually receive service on Friday will have their waste collected on Saturday, Dec. 30. The following week will be a green recycling collection week.
To ensure the safety of waste collection workers, residents are urged to refrain from placing hazardous and flammable items such as batteries, gas containers, and chemicals in garbage and recycling carts. Hazardous waste can react and start fires in the back of collection trucks, putting workers at risk. Instead, residents are encouraged to bring these items to one of Mecklenburg County's full-service centers.
From Jan. 1-5, Solid Waste Services will resume regular collection schedules for garbage, recycling, yard waste, and scheduled bulky waste. During this time, it will be an orange recycling collection week.
For those looking to dispose of natural Christmas trees, collection will begin on Jan. 1. Residents are advised to place their trees at the curb for yard waste collection. However, trees should be free of lights, decorations, tinsel, and tree stands. Artificial trees and wreaths, on the other hand, should be scheduled for bulky item collection by calling 311 or 704.336.7600, visiting curbit.charlottenc.gov, or using the CLT+ app.
To stay updated on collection service impacts, Solid Waste Services offers collection updates via text. Residents can receive updates by texting their day of service to 73224. For example, if their collection day is Thursday, they would text "Thursday" to 73224.
