The Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT) is dedicated to enhancing safety on the city's roads. As part of their commitment to providing safe and efficient transportation systems, CDOT has adopted Vision Zero, a global strategy aimed at eliminating all traffic-related deaths and severe injuries.
In an effort to raise awareness about road safety, the City of Charlotte observes the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. This annual event pays tribute to the victims of road accidents and acknowledges the local and global initiatives to reduce road casualties.
CDOT recognizes that even one traffic-related death is one too many. Thus, the department is actively working towards establishing safe streets in the community. By participating in Vision Zero, the city aims to reduce crashes and eliminate traffic-related fatalities and severe injuries by 2030. Individuals can contribute to this goal by taking a pledge to travel safely.
To make the city more pedestrian-friendly, CDOT has implemented Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPIs) at various intersections. LPIs give pedestrians a head-start by providing them with a walk signal before vehicle traffic receives a green signal. Studies have shown that LPIs can reduce crashes between vehicles and pedestrians by up to 60% at treated intersections, encouraging more people to choose walking as their mode of travel. Currently, the city has 258 intersections equipped with LPIs.
Taking pedestrian safety to the next level, the city has introduced the "LPI+". This innovation incorporates right turn flashing yellow arrow signals during the LPI, allowing only right-turning traffic to proceed while holding through-traffic. This minimizes the impact on vehicle delays and can extend the duration of the LPI to cover the entire walking period.
Recognizing the vulnerability of pedestrians and bicyclists on the road, CDOT emphasizes the shared responsibility of all road users to keep each other safe. The department is determined to create a safe and accessible environment for all pedestrians and encourages residents to report any hazardous conditions that may lead to collisions or property damage to the city's 311 system.
Between 2019 and 2023, Charlotte witnessed the loss of 334 lives due to traffic crashes. However, CDOT believes that these incidents can be prevented through proactive measures. By prioritizing safety and implementing initiatives like Vision Zero and LPIs, CDOT is dedicated to reducing traffic-related fatalities and creating a safer transportation system for all.
