Renovations on a former hotel in south Charlotte, now transformed into permanent, affordable housing for older adults who have experienced homelessness and face health challenges, have been completed. Named Forest Point Place, this project specifically caters to individuals aged 55 and above.

The opening ceremony, held on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, drew a crowd of approximately 100 attendees. The initiative stems from Mecklenburg County's purchase of the hotel in December 2022, supported by nearly $15 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds. An additional $1 million was allocated in fiscal year 2025 for renovations, with a $2 million budget proposed for 2026. The transformation aimed to create housing and support services for older adults facing homelessness.

Starting in July 2023, residents began moving in. The site's capacity has been expanded to accommodate over 90 residents, doubling the original setup. The initiative originated during the pandemic, where temporary accommodations were created for at-risk older adults.

Forest Point Place is a collaboration between Mecklenburg County Community Support Services/Housing Innovation and Stabilization Services division and the organization Roof Above. Roof Above manages the property and provides services like case management, nursing care, substance use interventions, job training, and life skills development to tenants.

Remarks during the opening were made by project leaders. Dena R. Diorio, Mecklenburg County manager, highlighted the situation, stating, “More than one in four homeless residents in our community is an adult over the age of 55. This will be an affordable housing option for individuals, couples and parents with adult children who are 55 years and older experiencing homelessness and who have other vulnerabilities. This County commitment allows these residents the opportunity to age in place.”

Roof Above’s CEO, Liz Clasen-Kelly, remarked, “We celebrate not just the opening of Forest Point Place, but the promise that lives and communities can be transformed through partnership.”

The project addresses a rising trend of homeless older adults with health conditions in Mecklenburg County, where around 500 individuals in the homeless system meet these criteria. Forest Point Place provides a supportive housing environment, designed to enhance housing stability and health outcomes. Additionally, it aligns with the county's strategic focus on senior services.
