Senators Thom Tillis, John Cornyn, and Marsha Blackburn have introduced a bill that aims to strengthen penalties for individuals who harm or kill law enforcement officers. The legislation, known as the Justice for Fallen Law Enforcement Act, proposes the death penalty or life imprisonment for the murder of federal, state, and local enforcement officers. It also suggests a 20-year prison term for assault resulting in serious injury to law enforcement officers.

The motivation behind this bill stems from the tragic death of Greensboro Police Sergeant Philip Dale Nix, who was killed while off-duty after confronting suspects involved in theft. In 2023 alone, 378 officers were shot in the line of duty, with 46 of them losing their lives to gunfire. Additionally, there were 115 ambush-style attacks on law enforcement officers, resulting in 138 officers being shot and 20 of them being fatally injured.

Senator Thom Tillis emphasized the need for accountability, stating, "Law enforcement officers in North Carolina and across the country are heroes who risk their lives every day to protect our communities." He further added, "Those who commit senseless acts of violence against law enforcement officers must be held accountable for their actions." Senator Tillis believes that this legislation will create harsh federal penalties for criminals who specifically target law enforcement officers.

Senator Marsha Blackburn also expressed her support for the bill, stating, "Anyone who willfully injures or takes the life of a law enforcement officer should face severe consequences and the highest criminal penalties." She highlighted the bravery of law enforcement officers and emphasized the importance of ensuring that perpetrators are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Senator John Cornyn echoed his colleagues' sentiments, emphasizing the need for strong consequences for those who harm law enforcement officers. He stated, "Criminals who target our brave men and women in uniform should face the toughest possible consequences." Senator Cornyn believes that by enhancing penalties for murdering or assaulting a law enforcement officer, this legislation will contribute to the safety of those who risk their lives to protect others.

The Justice for Fallen Law Enforcement Act also includes a provision that requires a study to be conducted after 36 months. The study will report to the House and Senate Judiciary Committees about the prosecutions resulting from the implementation of the act.

In conclusion, Senators Tillis, Cornyn, and Blackburn have introduced legislation that seeks to strengthen penalties for individuals who harm or kill law enforcement officers. The proposed bill aims to create harsh federal penalties, including the death penalty or life imprisonment for murder and a 20-year prison term for assault resulting in serious injury. The senators emphasize the need to hold accountable those who target law enforcement officers and ensure that justice is served. The bill also includes provisions for a study to assess the effectiveness of the legislation after a certain period of time.
