WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina has shown his support for the supplemental package that provides funding for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. The Senate passed the package in a 70-29 vote earlier today. Senator Tillis spoke passionately about the importance of providing funding to combat adversaries and support allies during his remarks on the Senate floor.
During his speech, Senator Tillis highlighted the resilience of Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. He emphasized the role of Western world and NATO allies in supporting Ukraine and opposing Putin's desire to reestablish the Russian Empire. Senator Tillis stated, "Two years ago when Russia attacked Ukraine, the world thought that Russia was going to have air superiority within a couple of days and control all of Ukraine within a couple of weeks. But Ukraine has defied expectations because the Western world, NATO allies in 25 countries, have come together and made it very clear that Putin's desire to reestablish the Russian Empire is inconsistent with a democratic world order."
Senator Tillis expressed concerns about China and the potential consequences of the United States retreating from its leadership role in the Western world. He emphasized the importance of the United States remaining an exceptional nation and a beacon of hope for democracy. Senator Tillis stated, "When we step away, who fills the void? You’d be hard-pressed to find any nation that has the scale and the ability to do it but the United States, with all due respect to my friends in NATO. China is watching."
Highlighting the significance of the vote, Senator Tillis expressed his determination to not be on the wrong side of history. He emphasized the negative consequences of walking away and allowing the alliance supporting Ukraine to crumble. Senator Tillis warned of an emboldened China if the United States fails to stand with the free world. He concluded, "I believe that we have to vote today. And we have to respect some of the priorities, maybe the concerns of the House, as they move this through. But let’s let this chamber be the chamber that stands with the free world. That’s what we can do today. That’s what we must do today."
Senator Tillis' support for funding for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan aligns with his commitment to maintaining a strong stance against adversaries and supporting allies. His vote in favor of the supplemental package demonstrates his dedication to ensuring the stability and security of these nations.
The passage of the supplemental package in the Senate is an important step in providing essential funding to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. The support from Senator Tillis and other lawmakers sends a clear message of solidarity and commitment to the values of democracy and international cooperation.
