Charlotte FC continues to celebrate their exhilarating 3-2 victory against Atlanta United. Approximately 3,000 Charlotte supporters traveled to Mercedes-Benz Stadium to support the team, and their chants were audible above the home crowd.
Although Atlanta struck first, it was Liel Abada who stole the spotlight by leveling the score and then netting two goals in quick succession within ten minutes. Head Coach Dean Smith expressed his satisfaction after the match, saying, "I'm glad we're sending them home happy."
With this away victory boosting their confidence, Charlotte FC now prepares for two home matches before facing a series of challenging away fixtures.
D.C. United began the 2024 MLS season strongly but have since cooled off and currently occupy 10th place in the Eastern Conference, just one point shy of the playoff line. This highlights the competitive nature of the conference where only six points separate D.C. United from fifth-place Charlotte FC.
Following a difficult 2023 season, D.C. United appointed Troy Lesesne as head coach. Despite challenges during this transition, Lesesne has established a clear playing style that includes strong defensive high pressing and effective counterattacks.
Striker Christian Benteke has been pivotal for D.C., emerging as one of the league's top performers and currently ranking second in the MLS Golden Boot race with 13 goals. However, despite Benteke’s efforts, D.C. United is winless in their last five matches and has conceded the second-most goals in the East while maintaining a strong attacking presence with one of the highest goal tallies in the conference.
Despite being at different ends of the Eastern Conference standings, D.C. remains a formidable opponent that Charlotte cannot underestimate.
Charlotte FC won their first match of the season against NYCFC with a gritty 1-0 win at home before embarking on three consecutive road games resulting in a draw with Vancouver and narrow losses to Toronto and Nashville.
Upon returning to Bank of America Stadium, they defeated defending MLS Cup Champions Columbus Crew by a score of 2-0 and drew with Supporter’s Shield Champions FC Cincinnati in a 1-1 match.
After suffering back-to-back losses to Minnesota and NYCFC following these successes, Charlotte responded with an impressive five-match unbeaten streak without conceding any goals until it was ended by New York Red Bulls. Liel Abada quickly revived his team's momentum by securing his first brace for Charlotte FC in their subsequent game against Atlanta United.
