The Carolina Panthers have arrived in Munich, Germany, to commence the Keep Pounding Tour, aimed at expanding their fan base ahead of the International game against the New York Giants in November. The tour includes current Panthers players Ikem Ekwonu and Sam Franklin Jr., as well as team mascots Sir Purr and two Top Cats cheerleaders.
Throughout the week, the Panthers will engage with German fans, partners, and military communities through various activities such as flag football clinics, military base visits, and interactive fan experiences. The team is set to play against the Giants on November 10 at Allianz Arena, home of FC Bayern Munich.
On Monday, an Afternoon Flag Football Clinic will be hosted with the Munich Ravens. Over 130 local children are registered to participate in this event, which will feature coaching from Ekwonu and Franklin Jr., alongside Joe Thomas, former Cleveland Browns Hall of Fame offensive tackle and head coach of the Ravens.
Tuesday's agenda includes a tour of Allianz Arena followed by an event at Pizza Hut where fans can win prizes and meet the players. Wednesday’s schedule begins with a Pep Rally at Daimler headquarters before hosting another flag football clinic at Stuttgart Military Base. The day concludes with attendance at the Germany vs. Hungary Euro Cup Match.
The Panthers' efforts in Germany align with the NFL's expansion strategy initiated in 2021 that allows up to four teams to play neutral-site international games annually. Andreas Jung, chief marketing officer of FC Bayern Munich stated: "We are looking forward to welcoming the NFL to our Allianz Arena for the second time... It's a great story to welcome the Panthers to Munich."
The Panthers have been active in engaging with German fans over recent years. Notably, Steve Smith Sr., a former team ambassador, hosted events in Frankfurt during NFL games last November. Additionally, players like Mike Rucker and Luke Kuechly have participated in past football clinics and events across Germany.
The ongoing initiatives are part of a broader strategy following December 2021's announcement granting Carolina Panthers marketing rights in Germany under the NFL's Global Markets Program (GMP). This program aims to build global brands and foster international fan growth for participating teams.
Reflecting on his experience in Germany, Johnny Hekker noted: "All the people I interacted with were just very proud... I think it is a sense of accomplishment for them." He emphasized how well-received these events have been among local fans.
Hekker also shared a personal anecdote about owning lederhosen from his previous trip: "Those are mine forever... maybe waiting for the trip next year."
