A Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) has opened in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, to support residents affected by Tropical Storm Helene. The center is located at Corvian Community School, 9501 David Taylor Drive, and operates from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Sunday.

The DRC serves as a central location where survivors can meet with FEMA representatives. At the center, individuals can apply for FEMA assistance, receive local aid referrals, and apply for low-interest disaster loans through the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

FEMA's financial assistance can cover basic home repairs, personal property losses, or other disaster-related needs such as childcare, transportation, medical expenses, funeral costs, or dental care.

Other recovery centers are already operational in various North Carolina locations including Asheville and Bakersville. Information about these centers can be found at fema.gov/drc or by texting "DRC" along with a zip code to 43362. More centers are expected to open soon.

The centers are accessible to people with disabilities and equipped with assistive technology. Residents of 39 North Carolina counties and members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians can visit any open center without an appointment.

Applying for FEMA assistance does not require visiting a center; applications can be submitted online at DisasterAssistance.gov or via the FEMA app. Assistance is also available by calling 800-621-3362. Users of relay services should provide their service number to FEMA.
