D.J. Wonnum is nearing a return to the field after an offseason marked by significant health challenges. The Carolina Panthers linebacker detailed his recovery process, which included three surgeries following a Christmas Eve injury that ended his season with the Minnesota Vikings. Complications arose when his body rejected internal stitches, leading to a MRSA infection and blood clots from intravenous antibiotics.

Wonnum reflected on his experience, stating, "It just makes me appreciate... all the little things like waking up and being able to stand on two feet and walk." He emphasized gratitude for everyday activities often taken for granted.

During his rehabilitation, Wonnum spent considerable time in the hospital, forming connections with fellow patients facing more severe conditions. "I got close with a lot of people," he said. "My situation compared to theirs, it was nothing."

The medical issues delayed Wonnum's integration into the Panthers' lineup after signing in March. Despite these setbacks, he maintained focus on learning the team's defense and bonding with teammates and staff. Defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero praised Wonnum's dedication: "He's meticulous in terms of his study and preparation... I have a lot of respect and high praise for this guy."

Wonnum's resilience has been tested as he navigated setbacks from infections and blood clots. He acknowledged feeling like he was "letting the team down" but remained determined to overcome obstacles beyond his control.

As he prepares for his return, Wonnum expressed eagerness to rejoin his teammates on the field: "Ready to get back out there," highlighting how valuable each step forward has become.
