The last public appearance of Jack Plummer involved him running Panthers plays effectively. For the past seven weeks, however, he has only run Panthers plays if they were included in other teams' playbooks. This week, with uncertainty surrounding Andy Dalton's right thumb injury and his ability to serve as a backup on Sunday at Denver, Plummer is taking extra practice reps.

Plummer is the only quarterback on the roster besides starter Bryce Young. He expressed understanding of his position: "Obviously, they've got to get the guys who are playing ready to play; I understand that," Plummer said. "For me it's making the most of whatever limited reps I get and being mentally prepared for whatever may happen."

If Dalton can be a backup, he will be; otherwise, Plummer might be activated for the game. His preseason performance was notable after struggling initially but later improving against Buffalo with 278 yards and two touchdowns.

Since then, Plummer was released and signed back to the practice squad as Young and Dalton have been preparing for games. Meanwhile, he has been working with the scout team in practice.

Plummer described his recent experiences: "Yeah, I mean, I didn't run any Panthers plays really for the game plan stuff as a third-string guy," he said.

His situation changed when he learned about Dalton's car accident. After ensuring Dalton was unharmed, Plummer recognized that his role could shift this week.

Offensive coordinator Brad Idzik emphasized preparedness among quarterbacks: "Yeah, you've got to find a way to steal your reps," Idzik said.

Mike Bercovici assists in keeping players ready by reviewing scripts after practice with younger players like Plummer. Bercovici's own experience as a former quarterback helps him guide players like Plummer through their roles.

Jalen Coker, an undrafted rookie receiver who worked closely with Plummer during preseason games, emphasized timing and readiness: "It's really about timing... expecting the ball at a certain time," Coker explained.

Coker also noted Plummer's dedication: "He's internally motivated; he's always in the playbook... He's very detailed in what he does," Coker stated.

As circumstances evolve each week for young players like Plummer and Coker, they remain prepared for opportunities that may arise out of necessity or otherwise.
