The Carolina Panthers remain optimistic about the potential of rookie wide receiver Xavier Legette despite a missed opportunity in their recent game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Panthers were close to securing an upset victory when Legette almost completed a crucial catch in the final moments of the match. However, after review, it was ruled an incomplete pass, resulting in a 22-16 loss for the Panthers.
Legette expressed his frustration post-game, saying, "S---, I thought I caught that." The call was not challenged as it occurred within the last two minutes of play and did not receive an official review from the NFL office.
Panthers head coach Dave Canales commented on the situation: "I thought that would have been the protocol but, you know, the ball moved around a little bit. I think we saw that, the officials saw it, we saw it on the sideline. We just thought it was close."
Legette reviewed footage afterward and acknowledged he should have made the play: "I just watched the video, they just put the replay up. I didn't know it hit the ground. I got to make the play," he said.
Despite this setback, Legette showed promise with two catches for 39 yards during Sunday's game. He played a significant role earlier in a key 31-yard completion on third-and-11.
Coach Canales emphasized Legette's importance to the team: "That's a big play we're counting on... And Bryce steps up makes a beautiful throw in the situation... those are plays that we just got to find a way to make for us to get back on winning column."
Canales also stressed focusing on controllable aspects of gameplay across offense, defense, and special teams.
Bryce Young reaffirmed his trust in Legette's abilities: "I always know he's going to make next one... I'm going keep throwing him ball again. I trust him every situation."
Veteran receiver Adam Thielen offered support to Legette after Sunday's performance: "We've all been there... He's hard worker... proud of him and had great game."
