Today's break from practice allows Panthers linebacker Josey Jewell to enjoy Christmas with his family. This year, like every year, the holiday coincides with another special occasion: his birthday.
Reflecting on sharing his birthday with Christmas, Jewell remains diplomatic about the experience. "It was OK," he remarked when asked if he missed out on birthday gifts as a child. "No complaints."
Growing up in Decorah, Iowa, Jewell recalls large family gatherings during the holidays. His family's celebrations often included around 20 relatives, but his mother's side of the family added more depth to the festivities, sometimes bringing together 35 people.
"It was cool," Jewell commented with a laugh. He appreciated having everyone around for both Christmas and his birthday, noting that it increased the likelihood of receiving presents.
Now at age 30, Jewell reflects on how sharing these events shaped his perspective. While musing about an ideal birthday in July—far from holiday commercialism—he acknowledges that this timing would coincide with training camp commitments.
Despite any drawbacks of a December 25th birthday, Jewell cherishes the chance to spend time with loved ones and enjoy a day off work during this festive season.
