The Carolina Panthers are once again facing adjustments at the linebacker position as they prepare to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Veteran linebacker Josey Jewell has been ruled out due to a concussion, prompting changes in the lineup. Chandler Wooten and Jacoby Windmon will be stepping in, with Jon Rhattigan available as a reserve. Wooten rejoined the team after a brief stint with the San Francisco 49ers practice squad.
"Life comes at you fast," remarked Wooten.
The Panthers have faced numerous challenges this season, starting with Shaq Thompson and Jewell inside. Thompson was sidelined for the year in Week 4, and recent injuries have further depleted their ranks. The team currently ranks last in run defense, allowing an average of 175.2 yards per game.
"It's communication, right?" said head coach Dave Canales. "It's all the variables, all the situational things that come up throughout the course of a week."
Wooten brings experience from his time with defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero's staff over two offseasons. Windmon was signed from the Steelers practice squad and has familiarity with inside linebackers coach Pete Hansen from UNLV.
On offense, rookie wide receiver Xavier Legette is expected to play against the Buccaneers after missing last week's game due to injury. Legette participated fully on Tuesday and was limited later in the week but showed enough progress for coaches to feel confident about his return.
"It was really just like each day just going through the volume that we asked of him," Canales noted.
In secondary news, Jaycee Horn's availability remains uncertain due to a hip injury. He did not practice this week and is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game.
"We'll check in with him," Canales stated regarding Horn's status.
With Chau Smith-Wade out due to illness and chest issues, Dane Jackson may fill in at nickel position. This situation could also provide opportunities for younger players like Akayleb Evans and Shemar Bartholomew if Horn is unavailable.
"We'd love to see Akayleb Evans; would love to see Shemar Bartholomew as well," Canales mentioned regarding potential changes in lineup depending on Horn's status.
