The Carolina Panthers are focusing on improving their defense after a challenging season, particularly in addressing their run defense, which ranked last in the league. A key player in this effort is defensive tackle Derrick Brown, who missed the entire 2024 season due to a knee injury sustained in Week 1. Brown is eager to return to the field for Organized Team Activities (OTAs) this spring.

Reflecting on his absence, Brown said, "I was talking to my wife, and I told her I damn near felt invincible... So it sucked to miss the whole season not to be able to be out there with the guys." Despite being sidelined, Brown remained actively involved with the team and received support from staff and teammates.

Brown has been working on his recovery and expressed optimism about his progress. "I'm good, you know. I'm halfway through the process of coming back," he stated. During his time off, he enjoyed spending more time with his family but found it difficult not being able to contribute on the field.

Center Austin Corbett has been supportive of Brown during his rehabilitation process. Corbett himself recovered from a torn biceps tendon and shared insights with Brown about recovering from knee surgery. He praised Brown's determination: "He's been awesome... It's tough, but he's a freaking fighter."

Teammates recognize Brown's potential impact upon returning. Guard Robert Hunt commented on Brown's abilities: "He's a bad boy, so to get him back... I'm really excited about what we can do." Cornerback Jaycee Horn emphasized the importance of having Brown back for improving their run defense.

Head coach Dave Canales described Brown's return as "a huge get for us," while linebacker Shaq Thompson noted how crucial Brown is for stopping opponents' runs. The team looks forward to integrating him back into their plans as they prepare for next season.

Brown acknowledged the challenges faced by the team without him but remains focused on contributing once again: "We don't get to choose the cards we're dealt in this business... we just need to execute." His return is seen as a significant step towards strengthening the Panthers' defense.
