Bohdan Fetisov, a recruit at the Charlotte Fire Academy, is nearing the completion of his training as part of Recruit Class 129. His journey from Ukraine to the United States has been driven by a desire to help others and build a new life amidst adversity.

Fetisov, who left his home in Ukraine two years ago due to escalating conflict, is on track to graduate on February 7, 2025. "My goal has always been to help people," Fetisov expressed. "Becoming a firefighter here is my way of giving back to a country that has supported Ukraine during its hardest times."

His decision to leave was prompted by the dangers posed by the Russian invasion in early 2022. "I love Ukraine, but staying there was no longer safe," he said.

After arriving in Charlotte with limited resources, Fetisov applied and was accepted into the Charlotte Fire Academy. The transition was facilitated by his fluency in English, which he developed over ten years as a translator.

Charlotte Fire Chief Reginald Johnson commended Fetisov's resilience and dedication: "Bohdan’s story is a testament to the courage and determination we value in our department."

As he prepares for graduation, Fetisov reflects on his journey and the support he's received from academy staff and classmates. He aims to serve the community that welcomed him with open arms.

"This city has embraced me, and I’m ready to give back," he stated. Despite missing his family in Ukraine, he remains focused on building a future in Charlotte.

The culmination of this chapter will be marked by his father's attendance at his graduation ceremony—a significant moment for both father and son.
