The City of Charlotte has been awarded $31.4 million in federal grants to fund four significant infrastructure projects within its Corridors of Opportunity program. These projects aim to enhance connectivity, improve safety, and ensure equitable access to transportation.

Mayor Vi Lyles expressed the importance of these investments, stating, “These federal investments affirm Charlotte’s strategic vision to build a connected, equitable and sustainable future. By focusing on infrastructure that serves all residents, these projects will have a lasting impact on our city’s growth and quality of life.”

The funding will be allocated as follows:

1. The Albemarle Cultural Trail will receive $1.3 million from the Active Transportation Infrastructure Investment Program (ATIIP). This project is designed to create a cultural trail along the Albemarle corridor, improving access to community hubs and enhancing pedestrian and cyclist safety.

2. The Rozzelles Ferry Bike Path is set to receive $1.4 million through the Reconnecting Communities Program. This initiative aims to reconnect neighborhoods by establishing a dedicated bike path along the Rozzelles Ferry corridor, promoting mobility and healthier lifestyles while reducing carbon emissions.

3. A substantial $25 million from the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) Program will be directed towards developing the Freedom Drive Mobility Corridor. This project seeks to establish an accessible multimodal corridor that connects residents with jobs, schools, and essential services.

4. Lastly, $3.7 million will fund the Orr Road Separation and Rail Crossing Closure project in the I-85/Sugar Creek corridor. This investment aims to replace an existing rail crossing with a new grade-separated crossing, enhancing safety and efficiency for current rail operations as well as future high-speed passenger rail service between Washington D.C., Charlotte, and Atlanta.
