Peyton Manning recently shared his thoughts on the development of young quarterbacks, particularly focusing on Bryce Young's progress. Manning was traveling to Camping World Stadium for a Pro Bowl practice with quarterbacks Drake Maye and Baker Mayfield when he reflected on Young's journey in the NFL.
Manning highlighted the challenges faced by both Mayfield and Maye, noting similarities with Young's early career struggles due to coaching changes. "Both those guys (Mayfield and Maye), you know, going through similar things that Bryce Young went through with the coaching change right away in their first couple of years," Manning stated.
Young, who had an inconsistent rookie season, has shown significant improvement. His performance earned him the nickname "Carolina Reaper." Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch praised Young, saying, "Sometimes it just takes time to get comfortable…but Bryce, shoot, I know he's a dawg and he's one of the best quarterbacks I played with."
Manning is known for his deep understanding of quarterback play. He previously supported Young after a challenging rookie year and expressed optimism about his future under coach Dave Canales. "I think that's a great combination for Bryce because it'll be the same system every year," Manning said last February.
The continuity in coaching has been crucial for Young's growth. Manning emphasized this point again: "I think the fact that Bryce has finally gotten to a system that's with Dave, and there's some continuity to it, you saw him playing well."
Jared Goff also commented on Young's potential: "Bryce is going to do a hell of a job. I'm excited for him to continue to improve and be in the same system now for another year."
Manning concluded by advising organizations to maintain stability around young quarterbacks: "My message to all organizations that are drafting young quarterbacks is to create some continuity around them."
Young's progress has been evident, and his continued development is expected to benefit the Carolina Panthers significantly.
