Chiefs coach Andy Reid had tempered expectations when Tershawn Wharton, a lineman from Division II Missouri S&T, joined their team in 2020. Wharton, who recently signed with the Panthers, soon showcased talents beyond his resume. Last season, including the playoffs, Wharton recorded 8.5 sacks.
"So he came from a small school, and he's just, he's a worker," Reid remarked during the league's annual meeting at The Breakers resort. Reid commended Wharton's progress in college, citing his increased strength and work ethic. Reid noted the challenges Wharton faced, given the low odds of making it to the NFL due to his smaller build as a 280-pound defensive tackle.
Reid acknowledged Wharton's transition from a running back to a defensive player. "Because of his work ethic and his athletic ability," Reid said. "He had been a running back, and he kind of outgrew that into a nose guard or defensive tackle, but very active player, great, great kid, quiet, a great kid and just tough."
Panthers executive vice president of football operations Brandt Tilis, formerly with the Chiefs, shared insights on Wharton's journey. The original plan in 2020 was to place Wharton on Kansas City's practice squad, but his performance earned him a spot on their 53-man roster.
"I mean, he was so clearly one of our best players that we couldn't do it to the rest of our roster and have any semblance of credibility with our team if Turk didn't make our 53," Tilis said.
In related news, Browns coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed his team's plan to travel to Charlotte for joint practice during training camp, although specifics are still pending. The Panthers hosted the Jets for a similar event last year upon their return to Charlotte.
