When Pete Carroll reflects on his former assistant Dave Canales, an early impression and fond memories become evident. "David came in as a real energetic," Carroll remarked at The Breakers resort. Canales, now the head coach of the Panthers, began his career in coaching at El Camino College, which aided his recruitment efforts in Southern California. This connection led him to USC as an assistant strength coach and video assistant in 2009. The subsequent move to Seattle with Carroll a year later marked a significant step in his career development.

Carroll shared, "I didn't know him very well at first... but he grew up in the program." Canales's journey under Carroll's tutelage was marked by dedication and loyalty, culminating in him embodying Carroll's philosophy and approach. The mentor observed his pupil's growth as he transitioned to a head coach, handling unique situations adeptly. A decision to bench and then reinstate quarterback Bryce Young was a significant milestone in Canales's journey as a coach. Carroll praised his approach, saying, "He did a masterful job" in managing the quarterback dilemma.

Andy Reid, coach of the Chiefs, also commended Canales, notably during a Panthers-Chiefs game where Young showcased notable progress. Reid noted Canales's strategic decisions, mentioning, "That's brilliant on his part."

From Carroll’s mentorship to Reid’s acknowledgment, Canales has navigated his role as Panthers head coach effectively, integrating key lessons from his mentors. Carroll concluded by describing Canales as an articulate leader, stating, "He grew in our organization, our mentality, our culture."
