Mecklenburg County has announced plans for a voluntary house elevation project on Hansen Drive. This initiative aims at reducing future flood-related damages and will be funded through a Hazard Mitigation Grant from both the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and North Carolina Emergency Management (NCEM).

The project will elevate existing homes and their support systems to meet the Community Flood Protection Elevation standards. This measure is expected to minimize the risk of property damage due to flooding.

The application process requires FEMA to explore and consider project alternatives. One alternative is to take no action, which leaves the building at high risk of flood-related damages. Another alternative involves the elevation of structures, a voluntary program preferable to property acquisition, which is less feasible because of local land values and homeowner preferences.

Public comments on the project are invited in writing, addressed to the FEMA Internal 11988 Reviewer at FEMA Region 4, 3005 Chamblee-Tucker Road, Atlanta, Georgia, 30341. Comments can also be emailed to FEMAR4Comme[email protected] with the subject line "[EMA-2021-FM-036-0003 COMMENT]."

The deadline for submitting comments is May 3. For more information on the project, individuals can contact Jonathan Beller at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services.
