The upcoming 2025 NFL Draft, scheduled to kick off on April 24 in Green Bay, has NFL teams, including the Carolina Panthers, actively preparing by updating their player evaluations and assessing team needs. As the draft approaches, the Panthers, who hold nine picks, continue to evaluate various positions, focusing now on the inside linebacker slot.
The Carolina Panthers have retained several inside linebackers, including Josey Jewell, Trevin Wallace, Claudin Cherelus, Jacoby Windmon, and Jon Rhattigan, and recently added Christian Rozeboom through free agency. Despite these additions, they are considering new talent in the draft. The Panthers' editorial staff does not intend their analysis to reflect the positions or rankings of the Panthers' football staff and front office, merely presenting a preview aggregated from various draft sites and mock drafts.
Highlighting some prospects, Jihaad Campbell from Alabama appears as an early consideration. "Jihaad Campbell—AlabamaCampbell was a full time starter for the Crimson Tide last season, and led the team with 117 total tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, 5.0 sacks. He also had two forced fumbles." At 6'3" and 235 pounds, his prospects seem positive despite needing further development.
Carson Schwesinger, hailing from UCLA, impressed as a first-team All-American, leading the FBS in solo tackles. His evolution from a walk-on to a team captain suggests potential, with Lance Zierlein of the NFL Network noting his intelligence and quick play recognition.
South Carolina's Demetrius Knight Jr. brings experience to the table at 25. He has been involved heavily in college football, even spending a year at UNC Charlotte, with an average mock draft landing around the third round.
Kobe King from Penn State enters with 97 tackles in 2024; his success against the run could attract teams needing to strengthen this area. Noted by Lance Zierlein, "King is 'best in the confines of the box, where he can play downhill and utilize his physicality.'"
Notre Dame's Jack Kiser offers veteran experience, having played 70 games and excelled defensively during the Fighting Irish's run to the National Championship.
Georgia's Smael Mondon Jr. presents speed and agility, albeit with concerns regarding his immediate impact due to past injuries and size. His college credentials, though, make him a probable attraction.
Jay Higgins from Iowa delivered impressive performances, evident from his 171 tackles in 2023 and 124 in 2024. Despite his smaller size leading to later projections, his accolades and interceptions make him notable.
Lastly, Florida's Shemar James, despite being young and somewhat raw, shows promise for development, especially with his contributions to special teams.
With these potential selections, the Panthers can continue to build on their defensive capabilities through the draft.
