About one in six people in Mecklenburg County lacks adequate health insurance. Fortunately, two organizations, including Care Ring N.C., are helping to fill those gaps.
"At least 16% of the population in (Mecklenburg) county does not have insurance,” Tchernavia Montgomery, a social worker and executive director of Care Ring, told wcnc.com in a March 22 report.
The organization provides services to those who may be vulnerable as they lack access to quality healthcare, the report stated.
“It gives me peace of mind to know that I have somewhere to go that’s going to take care of my medical needs and that I can afford,” said Kenia Martinez, who has taken advantage of Care Ring’s services, in the report. “Especially in our community, I hear someone say I have this pain, I have this, I have that, but I don’t know where to go because I don’t have insurance.”
Care Ring, which is based in Charlotte, North Carolina, serves about 7,600 Mecklenburg County residents every year, the news station said. Its patients are mainly minority members and low-income populations, two groups that were disproportionately affected by COVID-19, according to the report.
“We have not closed because of COVID since the pandemic began because we understand that if we close our doors there are individuals in the community that would not receive care,” Montgomery said in the report.
